Sias University operates a Chinese “Kindergarten” (ages 3-6) and a Chinese primary school (grades 1-5) for our faculty’s children. Each year for the last 4 years they have added another year to their primary school. Fall 2016 there will be grades 1-6. We have two foreign faculty working in the Kindergarten teaching English and every year we are looking hiring teachers who have a passion for teaching English to Chinese children.

The Kindergarten position is an all day job, with set hours worked every day for five days a week. It includes more than just teaching, and requires less content preparation, and more interaction with the kids.  A Chinese teacher works with the foreign teacher in class throughout the day. (2 Openings)
The Primary school position is in a classroom setting.  The teacher only needs to be there during the time they are teaching, and can come and go when not teaching the class.  In this position there is less in-class Chinese language support. (7 Openings)

We interviewed two teachers and received the following answers (A & B):

1)  How much Chinese is required for teaching English in the classroom and speaking with Chinese teachers/administration?
A: I don’t think it’s ever been a requirement to speak Chinese, but it sure is easier in the classroom to know Chinese for me. The foreigners share an office with 2 teachers who are bilingual and we can talk with them anytime they aren’t in class or running an errand.

B: Speaking Chinese would be helpful.  Students under the age of eight have very little English and there are NO aides or Chinese teachers in the room.  The after school English Corner have a Chinese teacher in the room to help with behavior.  Note: after communicating issues with behavior, a Chinese teacher will pop in and out of our classrooms for a period of time.

2) How much of the teaching time will be from provided book/curriculum vs creating from scratch?
A: I gave 2nd Grade Teacher all my PowerPoints, music, and handouts. The book for 2nd grade is very basic and has no bookwork, I created everything from scratch last year. The 4th grade book has writing and reading activities the children should be able to do, so less preparation than for younger grades.

B: For 2nd grade the textbook has about eight pages to use for about a 2-week period of time, which includes about six words per 2-week unit.  Foreign teachers will need to supplement curriculum, while being aware that hands on, active learning is going to be better for younger learners. Foreign teachers need to set their own goals for English learning for the students.  The 4th graders are able to use the textbook more than the 2nd graders.

3) What are the hours taught per day and how many days per week?
A: Usually 4 English classes taught per day and 40 minute classes.

4) How many students in a classroom and how many aides (also are there aides or any teachers bilingual)?
A: There are 30 in each classroom, depending on the class. Each class has a class master in charge of the class who does not speak much English and only is in the classroom when asked at the beginning of the semester. The school has 2 bilingual teachers in the same office as foreign teachers. There are two other offices for Chinese teachers.

B:  There are two teachers that speak good English in the school.  One is the liaison between the Chinese staff and the foreign staff. Foreign teachers need to be pro-active regarding dates, expectations, sharing updates with Chinese leaders and asking for help.
